Memorial Day Monday

Today is Memorial Day in the U.S., a national ‘howliday’ where we remember all those who died while serving in the country’s armed forces. Originally known as Decoration Day back in the years after the Civil War (when Union and Confederate soldiers honored their dead by decorating their graves with flowers), it has morphed into the current form honoring all Americans who died serving their country.

Today is also the ‘unofficial’ beginning of the summer vacation season and as too often the case here, has been co-opted into a shopping frenzy with Memorial Day sales. It will be a quiet day of reflection at the Ranch, especially given the turbulent climate around the world. Today we honor those in our family who served their country and say a special prayer for the 4-legged who have also served this nation with distinction.

What plans do you have for this 3-day howliday?

Happy St. Patrick’s Day

Sam here. Although our lineage is German, we happily (ok, not so happily but we were tolerant) participated in the ‘wearing of the green’ for St. Patrick’s Day for mom’s sake. We had to work fast, Elsa tried hard to eat the garland. The parade and official celebration were last weekend, but any one knows that St. Patrick’s Day on a Friday will surely have some corned beef and cabbage along with a beer or two for local leprechauns.

Got any special plans for this holiday? Erin Go Bragh. ☘️ Here’s to a great weekend!

Trivia Tuesday

When I prepared the post for today, I realized I neglected to acknowledge a bit of trivia associated with today. So today will be a twofer with two posts. Affectionately known as Pi Day and celebrated in the US on March 14. A nod to the mathematical constant known as π (pi), this day is a fun day to eat pie, throw pies and discuss the significance of the number. March 14 is also the birthdate of Albert Einstein, the well-recognized theoretical physicist. So today, I say, Happy Birthday, Al and would someone please pass some pie?!

It is well known this upright is horrid with math, but any day associated with pie…irrational or not…well that’s an entirely different equation. Got any cool Pi Day plans?

What are you be doing on this “howliday?”

Monday Musings ~ February 13, 2017

Sam here, wishing effuryone a Happy Valentine’s Day tomorrow. Mom, Elsa and me hope you get to spend time with your special loved ones. My little sister had a mini-seizure last Friday so we’ve been keeping eyes on her. Mom was able to stem it quickly with some medication the vet sent her home with 4 weeks ago in case she had another episode. Luckily, it was a very minor one and she returned to her normal annoying self very quickly, without her usual reboot. Once mom was convinced she was ok, she began working on some projects she had been planning for us fur-kids.

i-love-you

We ‘snoopervised’ in the studio as mom drew up patterns and then sewed some  new stuffies from spare scraps she had lying around. I haven’t played with them yet, but Elsa seems jazzed about them, especially the Gingerbread Guy. Naturally, they’ve joined the rest of the migrating hooves and toys. What is it about her that makes her do that? She’s been barking at him just before she ambushes plays with him which is a good sign she likes him. So far I haven’t heard any screaming so I guess he’s ok, but he’s on his own as far as I’m concerned.

While these guys are nice and all, I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do with them. I think I’ll sleep on it, maybe it’ll come to me in a dream. I mean, the Gingerbread dude doesn’t even have any buttons for eyes that I can chew off. What kind of lame toy is that for a self-respecting wuss stuffie killer like me?!

Do you have any special plans for the loves of your life? I’m hoping mom bakes us some yummy treats. Mother Hubbard’s cupboard the treat bin is pretty darn bare. The dog bones she sewed aren’t nearly as tasty as they ones she bakes.

Monday Musings

Happy Monday, sports fans! Well…2016 is in the history books (and good riddance I say). And because we’re now looking at a fresh new slate, we often start out making resolutions.

Hope you got through the holidays fairly well and are ready to start anew.  Many people often post New Year’s Resolutions on social media in a feeble semi-serious attempt to hold themselves accountable to the world. For the record, I’m not one of those people.

Did any of your friends post a resolution to lose X number of pounds (losing weight is always high on the list of resolutions). This seems like a more realistic approach to the whole weight loss thing. {Smirk}cd557535dd1249032a4cbbafb7598b4b

So how did you do over the howlidays? Ready to start the New Year out dieting…or changing your lifestyle? I had been considering moving from vegetarianism to veganism. Then I realized how early you have to wake up and bagged that. I like sleeping in past 5 AM. Enjoy the extra day off, sports fans. There’s always tomorrow. 😉
